Round 1: Jason Doyle Rules Three Palms Soil By David Klein, Ph.D
Posted: 3/3/2008

This was the opening round of the TORCS. It follows the successful World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS). The event was a sandy gran prix moto cross track at the Three Palms Extreme Sports Park. This site provided rolling table top jumps, deep sandy turns and some muddy, root invested trail sections. The advanced classes also had an “extreme” section composed of 5 parallel telephone poles with a longer easy route provided. On Saturday riders were treated to a very muddy day. Course workers staged around the course to help riders through the muddier sections. It was a fair mixture of MX and muddy trails. It should be emphasized that there were no big dangerous multiple jumps or other super cross type obstacles. This course was excellent in design and provided a safe, challenging track for all the riders. Saturday held the one hour pro race where former Michigan MX star, Jason Doyle pulled away and left the field. Austin pro, Brian Johnson was second. Martin “Martini” Howell, a local Houston favorite went out with a clutch failure. Steven Rathman, fast for forever, won the 450F A class over Steve Dennis and budding trials star, Andrew Trousdale. Sunday was the Pro 2 hour race. While past TORCS star Josh Young won the start, it was Jason Doyle once again who pulled away and left the crowd of trail riders behind him. Don’t let the report of fast guys let you think that TORCS is not for the whole family. The crowd went wild in the Sportsman 15-29 B Class where Trey Chote and Zach Cornado battled till the end where Chote won by a single second! TORCS is a family atmosphere. With racing on both Saturday and Sunday, there is a class for everyone. Many, ride several classes. How about those mini 7-8 year olds? In a return to the future we see Lil Lane Rathman winning over Ryan Hartzog, just like their dads in 30+ A. Does fast run in the genes? Who is that, Billy Click? He won the over 60 class. Click was a pro motocrosser back in the 70s. Now he is near 70 and still fast! Of course the women were there. Jessica Conners out ran Denise Bailey in Women’s A. There were a total of 8 women in A, B and C classes and several more female mini riders. The largest class was 40+ C with 31 riders, second largest was 40+ B. Many “top of the hillers” are out trying to recapture their youth. These guy recognize TORCS as fun without the danger of modern SX obstacles. Two 50+ A riders showed how not to ride. They tried to occupy the same space over the first jump after the start. Bikes and bodies cart wheeled down the track seconds into an hour race resulting in a dirt mat and near grave. Someone screamed, “y’all should try 250 C next time! Round Two will be held at Powell’s Ranch March 8 and 9.
